This past weekend we all got together and spent the night at the Cedar Tree House Inn off the Mount Baker Highway. It was a beautiful house nestled in the woods- complete with campfire, creek and bunk beds. We spent some time going over our itinerary, talking about what service-learning means, designing a code of conduct and also discussing our first book, "Half the Sky". Between all of the business stuff we also cooked meals together, played games, and got to know one another a little bit more. It's going to be a great group!
One of our biggest focuses right now is on fundraising. We are working on collecting at least $7,000 to pay for the three houses we hope to build while in Guatemala. We will be volunteering with La Asociacion Nuestros Ahijados (The God's Child Project), building casas, working in the food distribution center, and hopefully spending time at Casa Jackson, a center dedicated to nursing infants and children who are malnourished back to health. Check out the website for more information about The God's Child Project in Guatemala and their other locations around the world: http://www.godschild.org/about-us/.
Stay tuned for updates about our fundraisers and goings-on until our departure date June 30th!
I am eager to hear how your travels went! I hope you all arrived safely and rest well, refreshed and ready to embrace the amazing journey ahead of you. Blessings to all of you!
